Since pectin is not a Specific Carbohydrate Diet™ (SCD™) food and neither is sugar, jam is not an easy SCD™ food to come by. When I was growing up my mom and grandmother spent hours in the kitchen canning homemade jam. The jam tasted great, but it was loaded with sugar.
I tried to make jam many times, but it was usually too runny to put on anything. I tried adding a little gelatin, but I didn’t like the taste and texture all that much. That’s when I discovered making jam with figs.
Why make jam with figs?
Figs naturally thicken jam, so they are great for making jam with no pectin. You can of course make plain fig jam, but I only like it in small amounts, so I didn’t want to make an entire jar of it. I love berry jams and I had a bunch of fresh raspberries I needed to use up so I decided on raspberry jam.
You can use other types of berries or a mixture if you like!
How do you make fig jam?
Unlike the many hours my family used to take canning jam, this jam can be ready in under an hour – though you should chill it before eating it. I don’t think this type of jam is able to be canned, but I have never canned anything. That’s why I make small batches and use them up.
To make this jam you basically need to chop, combine, and simmer to get everything mixed together and thick. That’s it!
What do you need to make fig jam?
You only need a few simple ingredients and some basic equipment to make fig jam. The fresh figs are probably the hardest thing to find.
Raspberry Fig Jam Ingredients:
- Fresh figs
- Fresh raspberries
- Fresh lemon juice
- Honey
Raspberry Fig Jam Equipment
- Food processor
- Saucepan
- Spoon
- Jar for storage
When are figs in season?
Figs are in season from late spring through late summer.
Can you use dried figs for this recipe?
I actually did try using dried figs once and it didn’t not turn out, even with attempted to rehydrate them. Fresh figs work best for this recipe.
Can you use frozen raspberries for this recipe?
Yes, you can use frozen raspberries. Just be sure to thaw them completely first. They will have more liquid in them so you may need to simmer the jam longer to get it to thicken.
I hope you enjoy this Raspberry Fig Jam as much as I do! Be sure to sign up for my newsletter to keep up with all my recipes!
