Not too long ago American Idol contestant Casey Abrams tweeted a link promoting a new website called IBD Icons. This website along with CCFA and Janssen Biotech are sponsoring a contest to win a trip to Las Vegas to watch the Zappos.com Rock n Roll marathon to benefit CCFA. Winners will also get to meet Casey. There will be one winner with UC and one with Crohn’s. Each will win a 3 day 2 night trip for two to Las Vegas in December.
Basically to enter the contest you send a story about following your dreams despite your illness.
I don’t know a lot about Janssen Biotech, but I do like the idea of the icons website. I know a lot of people are overwhelmed with an IBD diagnosis, so this could be a good way to show some positive stories. If you don’t watch Idol and don’t know anything about Casey – he is twenty years old and was a contestant on the last season of American Idol. He has UC. According to the story he posted on the website, he was diagnosed his freshman year of college, so only in the last year or two.
His condition became public when he became ill during the season and was hospitalized briefly twice. While he missed a results show, he was determined to keep competing and he never missed a performance. Not only did he perform, he put a lot of energy and creativity into each performance, and you wouldn’t even have known he had an illness if the info hadn’t made it to the press.
I was never sure if Casey would comment on UC, since it was not him that brought it out publicly. It’s nice to see he is making the most of it.
