I’ve written a lot about on-SCD foods I’ve added back into my diet, but there is a flip side – SCD legal foods I can’t tolerate. I know I’m not alone in this. I’ve read other blogs where people can’t eat any dairy including the legal cheeses and yogurt, nuts, and eggs.
So far I’ve been able to eat all of those things but there are a few things I cannot eat.
Raw onions – raw vegetables are only allowed after symptoms have disappeared, but I cannot tolerate raw onions. They cause me stomach pain and upset. The worst is if I don’t know they will be on a salad and they are chopped up in little pieces.
Raw garlic – same as above.
Raw peppers – not quite as bad as onions and garlic but they seem too harsh for me. I love them cooked though – same with onions.
Alcohol – there are a (very) few legal one’s, but I avoid it altogether.
Blue cheese and gorgonzola – I can only have a few little pieces on a salad. Having a lot of it – like on a Cobb salad usually disagrees with me.
Horseradish sauce – way to strong for me – I’ve found that I can’t really tolerate spicy foods of any kind.
Hot peppers (jalepeno, habanera etc) – can’t tolerate them.
Sulphates – I try to by dried fruit that is sulphate free – I seem to be sensitive to it.
That’s pretty much it. I think most of these things are a little harsh on the digestive system and that’s why I can’t have them.
Anyone else have trouble with SCD legal foods?

Mine is coffee, I can have it every couple of months, but if I have it too frequently I get body aches. My son has ultra high antibodies to coconut and sesame. He also appears to be sensitive to walnuts and peanuts. I suspect he could outgrow those since he was three when he was tested. We added egg whites back to his baked goods after we did the SCD and a food rotation for awhile and he seems fine. I’m hoping that getting him on the SCD at a young age will help.
I am only 6 weeks into scd, so I am not experimenting with many of the foods, yet. I guess I am not unusual in that I cannot tolerate eggs, any dairy, or nuts. Also all citrus, vinegar and sulfates cause me to break out in hives. I find myself craving sauerkraut, but I do not think my insides are ready for it.
I too am nearing 6 weeks on the diet, but I have already discovered sensitivities to legal foods. I absolutely cannot tolerate squash: butternut and acorn. I get super sweaty, itchy, acne, gas, & bloating. It’s nasty & intense. I also cannot tolerate raw avocado. I experienced the same effects with the avocado as I did with the squash. Complete misery. Does anyone think maybe I could tolerate the avocado cooked? I found a recipe that called for cooked chicken & avocado to make little chicken tots. Will that make the difference?
@SCDer – it’s possible cooking the avocado could make a difference, but it’s hard to say unfortunately. I would make sure you are feeling well before you try it. I’m sorry you can’t eat squash!
@Mr.s Ed – I don’t drink coffee, but I wonder if that would disagree with me. I do good with black tea.
@AngelaM – It seems like those sensitivities are are very common. It sounds like you acidy foods are a problem for you too.
Sherry,
I have problems with SCD legal foods just like you.
I can’t eat:
raw garlic or onions
beans
peanut butter
almonds
I’ve had some trouble on the SCD, so I’m doing an elimination diet to try and isolate the food(s) that are giving me problems. Right now I’m off eggs, dairy, nuts, the above foods, and some other potential culprits. I’m getting better after about a week on the elimination–but I’m hungry. 🙂
Best,
Matt

I just started the SCD. Which snacks can I eat at the beginning I still have diarrhea.
Regards,
Danny
Dairy, 24 hr yogurt, eggs, and nuts for sure. I seem to also have a problem with salicylates which are especially high in raw veggies. This means salad! Its so frustrating! Im just starting the elimination scd diet so hopefully I can work myself up to this…
