SCD Recipe: Easy Grain-Free Apple Crisp

Apple crisp is one of my favorite comfort foods and crisps are so easy to make for grain-free diets like Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Paleo. The great thing about this comfort food is that there isn’t anything to feel guilty about. It’s just a few ingredients with just enough honey added to give it just the right touch of sweetness.

What Kind of Apples to Use?

For the best flavor it’s great to use different types of apples. Diffrent varieties have different flavors and textures. Different regions of the country and world will also provide diffrent types of apples.

I like to use a combination of a tart apple like Granny Smith and a sweeter apple like Golden Delicious when I make apple crisp, but honestly you can use whaever apples you have on hand. I don’t find that Red Delicious bake all that well, but I have used many different kinds including Gala, Honey Crisp, Pippen. Sometimes I just want to grab what’s already in the frige.

The topping for this recipe is very basic. It’s just almond flour and butter with a little cinnamon and salt. I don’t sweeten the topping because it absorbs the sweetness of the filling. I just like to add a little crunch and texture to the dessert.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
