Specific Carbohydrate Diet in the News

I was watching my local news this morning and I was excited to see Specific Carbohydrate Diet getting some coverage. You can check out the news story here. Even though the story says the diet is “new” and even said “until now” Crohn’s Diseases and Ulcerative Colitis have only been treated with pills, I’m glad to  see that the diet is now being taken more seriously in the medical community. Also – I don’t like that the headline on the news page says “Seattle Children’s Specific Carbohydrate Diet…” I’m on my 17th year of this diet, but that’s how under the radar it’s been. The important part is that it may lead others to look into it and they will see that it was developed a long time ago by Dr. Haas and Elaine Gottschall.

SCD News

This story stemmed from a study that is being done by Seattle Children’s hospital. The little girl in the story is being treated by Dr. David Suskind who is a doctor at Seattle Children’s Hospital. I think we all know how awesome it is that a regular doctor is using SCD as a treatment option.

A little while back I participated in a survey about SCD Dr. Suskind had initiated. He then did a study involving 12 young patients. I’m glad to see his research in being implemented for real treatment. I hope this kind of research continues around the country, and world. It would be nice if someone also did a study on adults, especially those who may have been dealing with IBD for a long period of time.

Dr. Suskind published his study in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology where you can download a pdf of his report. Suskind has also written a book about his therapy using SCD and has developed his own program. I haven’t checked out this book yet, but I do plan to.
