Breaking the Vicious Cycle

New Year Fresh Start for a Happy Gut

Over the next few weeks I’m going to be going over Breaking the Vicious Cycle from the intro diet through maintenance, through the murky world of what to do next.

breaking-the-vicious-cycleI am now entering my 17th year since starting the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I started the diet on October 31, 2000. Why start on Halloween? The day there is candy all over the office and at home?

Because I wanted to prove to myself that I could avoid those temptations. And also because I didn’t want those things anymore. I just wanted to feel good and if not having a piece of chocolate and sugar would do that I was game.

My symptoms were mild at the time. I had had surgery the year before and my Crohn’s was in remission according to all of my doctors. Still a year later I was experiencing upset stomachs on a regular basis and I new my gut wasn’t as normal as I had hoped it would be.

I lived in fear that the Crohn’s would come raging back and I didn’t want to go through that again. I began to research IBD in those primitive days of the internet and I stumbled across the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. I ordered Breaking the Vicious Cycle and read through the whole thing.

To be completely honest I didn’t think it sounded all that fun. No bread, pasta, or potatoes? No more diet soda? No ice cream, cake, or cookies – at least as I knew them?

But my desire for freedom from my unpredictable stomach won out and I picked my start date for SCD.

If you’re thinking of starting SCD or just need a reboot, please tune in. Be sure to subscribe to the Happy Gut For Life Newsletter so you never miss a post! When you sign up you’ll also receive a free sample of my SCD dessert cookbook Don’t Skip Dessert!
