Eat Your Broccoli

This report is from last August, but I just discovered it recently.

Broccoli, Plantains May Stop Crohn’s Disease Relapse

From WebMD August 25th 2010

The article says the fibers from broccoli and plantains may “block a key stage in the development of Crohn’s disease.” The study also tested apples and leeks, but they showed no effect. The study was testing the effect of the fibers on the movement of E. Coli across cells in the bowel wall. The study showed that broccoli and plantain fibers did decrease the movement, while apples and leeks did not. The study also found that the additive polysorbate 80 increased the movement.

Crohn’s often develops after the cells in bowel are attacked by bacteria, particularly E. Coli. Researchers suggested that increasing broccoli and plantain fibers in the diet could help prevent a relapse of Crohn’s.

Of course plantains our not a legal food on SCD. However, I have eaten them with no problems. Since they are also supposed to be effective in preventing relapse some people may be able to have them once they are healthy and have no symptoms. Just like bananas I wait until the plantains are very ripe before I eat them.

Food for thought! Maybe they should do a study and see how many people with Crohn’s refused to eat their broccoli when they were growing up!
